Updating Artifacts

Update a single artifact

cmx agent update python-craftsperson
cmx skill update skill-creator

This reinstalls the artifact from its original source, updating the lock file with the new version and checksum.

Without --platform, update targets only the default platform (Claude). --all means all tracked artifacts, not all platforms. If you want every installed copy of a skill to match, use sync, not update.

Update all tracked artifacts

cmx agent update --all
cmx skill update --all

Updates every artifact in the lock file that has a different checksum than the current source version.

Decision rule: update pulls from source to one platform; sync reconciles between install locations; promote pushes in-place edits back to the canonical home.

After any mutation, re-run cmx doctor to confirm the drift is actually gone. An exit 0 from update means the command ran, not that every sibling copy is now reconciled.

Adopting untracked artifacts

If you have agents or skills installed on disk that weren't installed through cmx (e.g., manually copied), use install --all to adopt them:

cmx agent install --all

This will install (and track) every source artifact that isn't already in the lock file with a matching version — including ones already on disk.
